re Sizergh Hawfinches - we've just spent the week over there and saw Hawfinch every morning (Sun-Thurs) - albeit only one on most days and mostly distant views. Having said that we had nine sightings on one day with a group of three making two visits. Occasionally they'd land in the small trees in front of the cafe in the picnic area. Viewing is from the cafe side of the car park as the play area side is often roped off. Mostly they were in the tree tops and only once seen on the ground in the play area where food is now put down. None gave close views on the ground. We were generally there 8.00am-9.15am

I was watching a Little Egret struggling to fly into the wind at Cowpen Marsh this morning when it was suddenly attacked by a juv. Peregrine, fortunately ( for the Egret ), it was unsuccesful, I'd have hated to have seen blood on that brilliant white plumage.

Billingham/Beck/P.Marsh/R.Tees.
Redshankx9, Canada Geesex2, Tufted Duckx4, Pochardx1, Tealx6, Bullfinchx4 3F/1M, Songthrushx4, Cootx4, BH Gull, around 70 birds with a couple of H.Gulls and corvids around the field next to the septic tanks.
Also Mallardx4, Moorhenx6, Wrenx1, Kestrelx1, Cormarantx1, but highlight of the morning was the bird id actually gone to look for. A cracking Kingfisher opposite Portrack Marsh, to far away to determine weather it was M/F.

Bottom of clay bank 12.15pm 400+ Fieldfare, Redwings 100+ , also 1 common Buzzard . Biggest flock of Fieldfare i have seen in a long time .

From yesterday.Seal Sands- Slavonian Grebe,Long Tailed Duck Male,Brent Geese X 16 ( landed on water, then flew across river to south Tees).
Greenabella-Merlin,Kestrel,Buzzard.Counted 31 Avocets on Saline Lagoon and Greatham Creek.

Had a look for the Water Pipits this morning but only three Meadow Pipits seen in total in contrast to the 10+ pipits we had yesterday. Very cold and windy so viewing conditions not great. Lots of habitat around for them so if you're looking for them this weekend, wrap up very warm and scan any of the shallow flooded areas at Fire Station Field, Saltholme Field (from the bench where the Dragonfly Path and Lake Walk split), Paddy's Pool, Haverton Gate and the Meadow.

The drake Scaup on Saltholme East has been joined by a female. The Water Pipit(s) this morning favoured the flooded areas on the meadow and near the Haveton Gate before becoming mobile. Will have a look first thing and try and pin them down.
