Almost certainly not a cuckoo - probably a dove or pigeon. I checked out woods around Middleton St George at the weekend for LSW and also drew a blank.

A birdwatching friend of my mine in Hilton Village said she heard a cuckoo this morning and listened to it for a couple of minutes. I remember that she had heard it very early last year too. Is this possible? Or is she going c....oo?

Female Sparrowhawk took out a Feral Pigeon in my garden earlier - fantastic to watch, albeit rather gruesome - the pigeon put up quite a struggle!! Feathers everywhere! But as Chris Packham said in a show I attended at Middlesbrough Theatre last Sunday (which was great by the way), it's shows a healthy food chain with the Sparrowhawk being at the top of it.
